Smallmouth Bass Fishing with Friends

Event Description:

Join Chuck H. for an afternoon of Fly Fishing for Smallmouth Bass on the scenic Rappahannock River. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or new to river fishing, this outing offers a great opportunity to connect with fellow fly fishers, enjoy nature, and learn from experienced locals.

We’ll meet at the Hogue Tract/Phelps Wildlife Management Area parking lot at 4:30 PM sharp. After a short 5-minute hike, we’ll access a productive stretch of river known for Smallmouth action in the summer. Be sure to bring your favorite flies, wading gear, and water-friendly footwear.

Directions:

  • Head to Sumerduck Road (VA-651) – Google Map with directions below.
  • Look for Phelps WMA/Hogue Tract parking area about 1 mile upstream from Kelly’s Ford.
  • A sign should mark the entrance—ample parking available.

What to Bring

  • Fly fishing gear (5–7 wt rod recommended)
  • Smallmouth-specific flies (Clousers, Poppers, Craw imitations, Game Changers)
  • Waders or wet-wading shoes
  • Bug spray, sun protection, and hydration
